In memory of Guilhem Picker: a visionary for sustainable agricultural development

It was with deep sadness that we learned in November of the death of Guilhem Picker, an emblematic figure and visionary in the development of Cameroon’s agri-food sector. For more than forty years, he left his mark on the country’s agricultural landscape, inspiring generations with his commitment, expertise and entrepreneurial spirit.

A builder of agricultural sectors

Arriving in Cameroon in 1977, Guilhem Picker first distinguished himself as a plantation manager, helping to increase production of bananas, pineapples and the famous Penja pepper. This was not just about agriculture, but also about structuring and developing local industries to make them pillars of the national economy.

As a consultant, he has successfully led missions for organisations such as COLEAD and USAID. Through his advocacy and support to exporter groups, Guilhem has played a central role in the development of the export sector. He has helped many producers to structure themselves and seize commercial opportunities in international markets.

A daring entrepreneur

But Guilhem Picker was not only a man of action and strategy: he was also an entrepreneur. He was one of the pioneers in the export of African products, setting standards that are still in use today, from packaging to the pasteurisation of palm wine. These achievements are testament to his courage and ability to anticipate the needs of a changing market, while showcasing Cameroon’s local produce.

A sustainable agricultural vision

In recent years, Guilhem has been passionate about developing the organic mango sector. He has widely shared his innovative work on hot water treatment.  His research and contributions have paved the way for more sustainable and resilient agriculture, leaving a valuable legacy for future generations.

A source of inspiration

Guilhem Picker was much more than an expert or an entrepreneur: he was a man of conviction, driven by a deep respect for producers, a constant desire to innovate and a vision of inclusive, sustainable development.

His story reminds us that every initiative, every collaboration, every standard set can have a lasting impact. He encourages us to continue this quest for progress by building agricultural sectors that are competitive, fair and respectful of the environment.

His children, who have been involved for many years in both entrepreneurial initiatives and the transfer of knowledge and know-how, particularly in the agricultural sector, now appear even more as the fruits of Guilhem Picker’s work and career.

We wish them strength and courage to get through this difficult period, for which we are never ready. In particular to you, Calvin, a committed member of COLEAD and a champion of sustainable agriculture for all.

On behalf of COLEAD and all those fortunate enough to have worked with Mr Picker, we thank him for his tireless efforts. Guilhem, your legacy will continue to inspire and guide our work.

May you rest in peace.
