In July Dr Chagema Kedera, COLEACP Coordinator for the New Export Trade (NExT) Programme in Kenya, presented a video on “Public-private cooperation in risk management” at a Workshop on Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Risk Communication hosted by the World Trade Organization Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures.
He discusses the four key aspects of risk management – governance, operational processes, capacity, and communication – through the example of Kenya’s experience. For successful risk management, close interaction between public and private stakeholders is vital.

STDF held an SPS Committee Side Event on “Systems Approaches in Food Safety and Plant Health”. A Systems Approach integrates at least two measures that are independent of each other to achieve SPS management.
Implementing a Systems Approach can improve export opportunities and provide an equivalent alternative to procedures such as treatments, or replace more restrictive measures like prohibition.
The presentations, including one from Phyllis Githaiga of the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), can be viewed here.

The EU-funded NExT Kenya (New Export Trade) programme is implemented by COLEACP in collaboration with the EU Delegation in Nairobi and Kenyan stakeholders.
